Importance of cleaning teeth

Cleaning teeth is very important in maintaining good oral hygiene. When teeth are clean the risks of Dearborn tooth decay and gum infection are averted. There are several ways of cleaning teeth. They include brushing teeth, flossing teeth and dental cleaning.

Brushing teeth

It is important to brush teeth. Most people brush their teeth for less than one minute. Schedules are tight but you should take your time to brush teeth thoroughly. The ideal amount of time that you should spend brushing teeth should be at least 2 minutes. Teeth should be brushed after every meal to avoid accumulation of plaque. But this is both uneconomical and very hard to follow. This is why dentists recommend that teeth should be brushed two times in a day; after waking up and before sleeping. If there is need for you to brush your teeth more than twice, your dentist or oral hygienist will tell you.

Dental cleaning

The purpose of dental cleaning is removing tartar and plaque from the surfaces of the teeth. This ascertains the cleanliness of all the surfaces of the teeth. Dental cleaning leaves your mouth feeling very clean. When you move your tongue round your mouth, you do not feel any sticky film on the surfaces of your teeth. Professional cleaning of teeth is referred to as prophylaxis. In Greek this word means to prevent in time. Dental cleaning prevents both tooth decay and gum disease.

When you go for dental cleaning the oral hygienist or dentist will make use of some specialized equipment that will remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of teeth without damaging the structure of your teeth. The dentist will first use an ultrasonic instrument to remove deposits of tartar and other deposits from the surface of teeth. The instrument vibrates. The vibrations shake of any deposits from the surface of teeth. After this, the dentist will use a hand instrument that aids the removal of smaller debris from the surface of teeth. After the teeth are clean they are polished using a slow-speed instrument which is held by the hand. Polishing leaves the teeth sparkling.

Flossing teeth

Flossing of teeth is done using dental floss. Flossing teeth helps to remove pieces of food that are left on teeth that are not reachable using a tooth brush. It gets rid of plaque that forms in areas that are hard to reach using a tooth brush. Plaque is a sticky film that forms on teeth. It is full of bacteria. These bacteria in the presence of starch and sugary foods produce acids that corrode the teeth causing tooth decay. The bacteria in plaque can also cause gum infection if allowed to accumulate below the gum line. You will hear dentists from time to time recommending that patients should do interdental cleaning. Dental floss is effective in doing so.
